For Art Lovers & Collectors

- an invitation into a private world

The Garden Route has a reputation for attracting artists and art collectors, and the R62 is nationally celebrated as The Art Route of South Africa.  Garden Route residents and visitors are particularly fortunate therefore, that within an hour or two's drive they can be immersed in the private life and landscape of one of our most exciting artists - Sheena Ridley.  It's a beautiful journey whichever way you go (see below for directions).

Over the past six years Sheena has been lovingly and persistently developing her farmyard property near Nolshalte in the Bo-Langkloof, Klein Karoo, as a sculpture garden, and you will certainly find much to hold your attention.

The sculpture garden itself is a visual delight, the sculptures being a reflection of what you will see around you - impressionistic forms of local country people and domestic animals.  When you have been here long enough to shake off the urbanity of city life, you'll be able to appreciate the genuine exuberance of these fresh sculptures with their display of unaffected sincerity. Sheena's isolated life has taken her away from mainstream artistic trends and has assisted her in developing an idiosyncratic style, which is quite unique today in South Africa.

The newly built studio provides a traditional 'Karoo-farm barn' space for her oil paintings, pastels and smaller sculptures, as well as works-in-progress. Her use of the palette knife in her oils creates a body of work which is highly desirable and which has been shown in galleries all over South Africa, and in collections abroad. Being able to see the tools and machinery that are involved in the process of making art is interesting, and something that is always lacking when one sees art exhibited in formal gallery spaces.

Sheena gives all-year-round private 5-day ferro cement sculpture courses for complete beginners through to experienced artists wishing perhaps to find a new medium. She also gives a two-day sculpture maquette workshop, ideal for a creative learning weekend.

She provides comfortable accommodation; all meals being a shared endeavour, with the best of ingredients supplied by the garden.  This holistic approach to art and lifestyle is bound to help any student find inspiration. Her accommodation and studio space is also offered as an artist’s retreat.
